10 Benefits of Matcha Green Tea

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Matcha Green Tea has been a popular drink in the Far East, specifically Japan for over a millennium. It is rich in antioxidants and is rich in nutrients. Because it is steamed, stemmed, and de-vined before it is stone ground and stored in a dark, oxygen free environment it is able to keep its great dark green color and sustain it’s antioxidant properties. It is among one of the highest quality powder tea available on the market.

I’m going to share 10 benefits of Matcha Green Tea then tell you about my personal favorite brand of Organic Green Matcha.

Benefits of Matcha Green Tea:

1. Antioxidants

Antioxidants are the  nutrients and enzymes that  fight against the negative effects of UV radiation, giving us younger-looking skin and preventing a number of life-threatening maladies. They are something that all health-conscious individuals look for in   foods such  as raw fruits, green veggies, and dark chocolate. The first amazing benefit of Matcha Green Tea is that just one bowl provides over 5 times as many antioxidants as any other food – the highest rated by the ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) method

2. Catechin-EGCg

Among all the  antioxidants, Catechins are the most potent and beneficial. The Catechin called Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCg) makes up 60% of the Catechins in Matcha Green Tea. Out of all the antioxidants, EGCg is  most widely recognized for its cancer fighting properties. Research has found that Matcha Green Tea contains over 100x  more EGCg than any other tea on the market.

3. Calm Feelings

For over a millennium, Matcha  has been used by Chinese Daoists and Japanese Zen Buddhist monks as a means to relax and meditate while remaining alert. This higher state of consciousness is all thanks to  the amino acid L-Theanine contained in the leaves used to make Matcha. L-Theanine promotes the production of alpha waves in the brain which induces relaxation without the inherent drowsiness caused by other “downers”.

4. Memory and Concentration

L-Theanine also causes the production of dopamine and serotonin. These two chemicals work together to  enhance mood, improve memory, and promote better concentration.

5. Energy and Endurance

While all green tea naturally contains caffeine, the energy boost received from Matcha is largely due to its unique combination of other nutrients. The increased endurance from a bowl of Matcha Green Tea can last up to 6 hours and because of the effects of L-Theanine, Matcha drinkers experience none of the usual side-effects of stimulants such as nervousness and hypertension.

6. Burnt Calories

Matcha Green Tea has also been shown to increase metabolism and help the body burn fat about four times faster than average. Unlike many diet aides currently on the market, Matcha causes no negative side-effects such as increased heart rate and high blood pressure.

7. Detoxification

During the last three weeks before tea leaves are harvested to be made into Matcha, Camellia sinensis are covered to deprive them of sunlight. This causes a tremendous increase in chlorophyll production in the new growth of these plants. The resulting high levels of chlorophyll in Matcha not only give this tea its beautiful vibrant green color, but  also a powerful detoxifying quality capable of naturally removing heavy metals and chemical toxins from the body.

8. Increased Immune System

The catechins in Matcha  have been shown to have antibiotic properties which promote overall health. Also, just one bowl of Matcha Green Tea provides substantial quantities of Potassium, Vitamins A & C, Iron, Protein, and Calcium. Further studies have even suggested that the nutrients in Matcha may have the ability to inhibit the attacks of HIV on human T-cells.

9. Cholesterol

Researchers aren’t completely certain how Matcha Green Tea has such a positive effect on cholesterol, however studies of different populations have shown that people who drink Match Green Tea on a regular basis have lower levels of LDL  cholesterol while at the same time displaying higher levels of HDL  cholesterol. Men who drink Matcha  are about 11% less likely to develop heart disease than those who don’t drink Matcha.

10. Flavor

Unlike a lot of other teas that require doctoring to  make them palatable to the average consumer, Matcha is absolutely wonderful all by itself. It’s crisp vegetative notes are  truly unique in every way. Matcha Green Tea even makes a great additive to shakes and smoothies and add awesome flavor to recipes.

Now that you know some of the great benefits of Matcha Green Tea-I want to share with you one of my personal favorite brands of Matcha.

It is Organic Matcha Green Tea by Kiss Me Organics. Found at: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DDT116M/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This specific Matcha is meant for smoothies, lattes, and baking; but I must admit I still used it as a hot tea. It tastes very green-about as green as it’s color-but in a good way. It is an awesome addition to a shake/smoothie because it has the benefits of raw fruits and veggies without  gritty finish making every smoothie smooth and delicious while still being very nutritious.  It reminds me a lot of kale when I add it to my smoothies. It also is a great topping to oatmeal or mixed in with yogurt.

It definitely delivers the above listed benefits! I feel more energetic when I use the Matcha green tea-and not that “I’m hyper -yay caffiene! Splat-well that was fun while it lasted” kind of energy. It is more of a steady supply of energy. It doesn’t come with jitters or crashes and it lasts throughout the day. The best thing is the suggested serving for the whole day is 1/2 – 1 tsp so it lasts a long time and of course, doesn’t take a lot.

I also can really tell the difference between days I do have it and days I don’t because I tend to be more calm and “forgiving” so to speak on the days I consume it than on days I don’t where I tend to me more touchy/easily irritated.

I really recommend this to just about anyone. The benefits are invaluable and cover a wide span.  This particular Matcha also comes with a recipe book (they email it to you after purchase) which really comes in handy. I also added a link below with even more recipes to try-even Ice cream! 🙂  Head on over and get some now and start seeing the awesome benefits of Matcha Green Tea in your life!
