Ever made a bet you never expected to hold water? Said words you wish you could take back? That’s exactly what happened when Don Simmons made a seemingly passive bet – and got held to it.
Follow Don Simmons in his journey to lose weight and run his first half marathon at the fastest recorded time. This is one bet he can’t afford to lose.
This is an excellent book! It is an easy read and very interesting. The first person writing draws you in as if it’s your own story. It’s also inspirational – if the fictional Don Simmons can lose the weight and run the race – so can I! (Don’t think on the logic lol)
It’s a relateable story once you get past the obscene bet Don places. Weight is an issue many of us deal with – especially in the US where obesity runs armpit, including in my own home. His journey is one many of think about making but never make moves to – or we dream of and work to achieve.
I highly recommend this book – it’s a must read!
Marathon-running? _ That stuff was for people who enjoyed being out with nothing more than a lightweight vest between them and the elements, wasn’t it?
At twenty-six stone, a devotee of takeaway food and nicotine, and head boy of the local drinking school, Don Simmons wasn’t the obvious marathon runner. In fact, he didn’t even understand the challenge of a half marathon, let alone having a go himself.
So what made the king of car salesmen take a year out in another country, when he had never even taken an afternoon off in his working life? And why was he now trying daily to squeeze himself into cycling shorts and trainers, and letting a woman bedecked in a cap of rubber flowers teach him water aerobics three times a week?
It could only happen to Don Simmons: Follow his adventure, suffer every tumble on the tarmac and celebrate his quest to earn the ultimate crown, The English Sombrero.
It’s 1999, twenty-six stone alcoholic, chain smoking, fast food junkie, millionaire businessman Don Simmons has a drunken £250’000 bet that he can complete a half marathon in under an hour and a half.
Once sober and realizing the seriousness of his wager, he decides to take a year out, moves to Spain, shed half his body weight and commence a grueling training regime in order to preserve his esteem, win the money and save his life.
This humorous novel set for the most part against the back drop of beautiful Catalonia, is book one in a series of four following the outrageous exploits of a modern day Avenger, a righter of wrongs, champion of Adversity and lover of malt whiskey.
