A few weeks ago I was given the opportunity to try K5 Learning with my daughter (5) and I can not say enough about it. It is a great program for homeschooling families with any children in the Kindergarten to Fifth grade levels to use in conjunction with their curriculum, or even for families with children who are “bored” or are under-stimulated,  or are struggling in math or English in school.

I have been using this for about four weeks with Bean and it has really been a huge help. You see, Bean LOVES math-she is incredibly great at it, but when it came to reading and spelling-things were lacking a little. Part of it was she has a minor dyslexia problem (common at her age and she is growing out of it) and partly because she just wasn’t getting it when I explained it. We needed a new approach.

K5 specifically focuses on Reading and Math while also working on basic math facts and spelling. By using information provided by the parent (or me in this case) it personalizes lessons based on grade and on their assessment.  It is fun and easy.  She really enjoyed the math-but it was the Reading she truly needed. The Math starts each section with a pre-test, then it does drills and works on math skills, and it finishes with a final test.

The Reading starts with working on letters then moved on to simple sight words. Bean absolutely enjoyed working with this program. (Just a note-she was in the K level of the program. Other grades may be different)  Each activity they did with her looked and felt more like a game than actual learning and she was really figuring out how to read and spell.  She is finally starting to read simple sight words on her own with out any assistance from me, and towards the end of her school year she was finally understanding how to remember words she had already seen and recognize letter sounds put together as words.

We plan to continue using this program alongside her home school curriculum and during breaks/summer when we won’t be sitting down and devoting so much time to working on these skills the way we have during the school year. Another thing I love is if we decide to use this program for E-man it will be discounted because he is a second child and it can be “programmed” to work with his delays and in the long wrong help him learn skills that he may otherwise struggle with in a way that is fun for him. (and yes, he LOVES playing with the computer.

For anyone looking for something to keep their kids sharp over the summer or winter breaks, home schooling, wanting to supplement with existing curriculum, or wanting an after school program for their children to work on Math and English-K5 Learning is the perfect program. Designed to help children in Kindergarten to Fifth grade develop the skills used as building blocks for later grades, K5 is bound to help your child succeed not only in K-5, but in the years to come.
