I am starting to see Jonathan Vine as a go to author when it comes to my ebooks about healthy living and eating. He has hit it out of the ball park so many times between his books on vegetarian eating, cookbooks (each that have tips on healthy living and the why of weight loss/healthy living) , and now his book about Weight loss and Detoxing with Green Smoothies. I am still a newbie to this healthy lifestyle-I still struggle with reaching for the take out menu or stopping in the drive thru for an order of extra salty fries, but between his Vegetarian weight loss book and this Green Smoothies book, I have been offered so many recipes, tips, and lifestyle changing opportunities, it is hard to deny that it is growing on me.
The Smoothies in this book range in scope from those for weight loss to those for detoxification (which sometimes goes hand in hand). It doesn’t just offer recipes for smoothies, but also an explanation for why they are so good for you and how they offer great nutritional value and health benefits. He offers tips and ultimately a call to action. Will we choose a healthy way of life for not only ourselves, but our families? Or will we continue to fill our bodies with junk that doesn’t give us sufficient nutrients to live a fully healthy life.
As far as the recipes found at the end of this book-my favorite has to be the very first recipe. It is simple and classic, but tastes amazing. It is the Apple and Spinach smoothie. It is perfect for fall time when sickness seems to spread quickly because it is packed with antioxidants that will build the immune system. Another favorite is the Almond and Strawberry smoothie and also the Kale Blueberry Smoothie. If Kale is a flavor too strong for you-I recommend substituting in Spinach or Swiss Chard instead because they have a more subtle flavor than Kale sometimes does in smoothies. Each smoothie has it’s own nutritional value and purpose and there are enough recipes to switch out smoothie flavors for almost two months or have a couple smoothies of different flavors each day for a month (or more!). I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is new to making smoothies or is interested in trying a Green Smoothie Diet to get healthy and jump start their weight loss.
