Style Writer 4

Ever gone to write a paper and hit a block? Not sure the proper grammar, spelling, wording, etc. to use? Perhaps you have the habit of using a lot of jargon in your writing that others just may not understand. That is where SyleWriter 4 comes in. It is a handy little program that can pick out things such as an over use of glue words or the wrong word choice and help come up with a better way to form the sentence. It also picks out your slang or jargon and offers easy word replacements that simplify your writing so all who read it can understand what it is you are trying to say.

I have really enjoyed using StyleWriter 4 in my everyday writing. It is simple to use, just select the section of writing you would like to have “analyzed” and open up StyleWriter 4. If it doesn’t automatically show the section of paragraph you have copied to the clipboard, just go to the file menu and click on ‘Open’. It will open the text from your clipboard and completely analyze the whole section for you from sentence construction to words used and more. It has done a lot to improve my writing skills and has gotten me past ruts and blocks I have come against. I found out that in some areas I am not that good at writing, and in others I really excel. It turns out I have great grammar, but I have a BAD habit of using a lot of ‘glue words’ that are not overly necessary.  I also use a lot of words of emphasis that are not necessary-but I tend to ignore StyleWriter on those, because I must admit, I love a bit of the dramatic. 😉

Overall, this program has been great! I have used it when writing up documents on Word to use for the charity race I am heading up. I also have used it when writing my blog posts (such as this one) and to proof a few more important documents I have worked on over the last few months. This program would be great for students, whether in public, private, or home schools. (or for those in college) It is also great for the working professional, blogger, writers, or even charity workers. It will help each document look more put together and have a more professional feel to it. They offer three forms of the program and a free trial to try any of the three and choose which you would like or would work best in your situation. It does not take long to figure out and is very self explanatory.

Red Apple Reading Program

I have thoroughly enjoyed using Red Apple Reading as a supplement to my kids’ home school curriculum. Teaching my daughter to read has actually been one of the more difficult things I have done. Not that she isn’t able or I’m not able, but sometimes we are not on the same page, so to speak. This program makes learning to read fun with games, activities, and fun apps just for kids. It is specially designed for children ages 3-9 which is perfect, because not only can my 5.5 year old daughter use it, but my four year old son has also started using it and later when Iman gets older, he can use it as well since it allows up to three child accounts under one parent account. (can we say Perfect?! by the time Bean is old enough to stop using the program, perhaps baby #4 (not yet thought of lol) will be around and ready to take that third account spot! 😉 )

When Bean signs in it opens up and lets her choose her level. We are using level B right now, but soon she will start level C. It goes to a map and starts with letter sounds and simple words and expands to harder words and letter sounds etc. to build upon the reading skills of the child. If something was “too easy” for Bean, she could simply skip that particular lesson and move to the next. It has helped her leaps and bounds! She is now trying to read things while we are out running errands or when she sees a billboard she will sound things out and is really blooming as an early reader. It is so exciting to see! I really don’t know if she would be doing so well if not for the help of Red Apple Reading.

As I touched on briefly, my four year old son has started using this program as well. His teacher mentioned he really liked the online program she uses there and I was already using this with Bean, so I thought I would give it a go with him. He has speech delays and doesn’t really talk a lot to other people, but since starting to work with Red Apple Reading program, not only is getting his letter sounds and learning, he is starting to talk more and interact in school in ways he wasn’t before. This program is a great, well rounded one as far as learning goes. The best part is my kids are having a great time while they use it!

Red Apple offers 5 FREE apps to those who use the program that can be found on i-tunes or Google Play and the kids just love them too. Each lesson starts with a video then is followed by three “games” that reiterate the concept being taught and they look and feel just like games making it great for kids of any age. (especially those who love to play online!) The program is good for reading levels from beginner to third grade, so it’s not a program that is only good for one specific age or level, but one that builds on itself and can be used from grade pre-k to 3rd. (perfect for home schooling families!)  I absolutely love this program and plan to use it for all of my kids and for years to come. I can not wait for the pre-school level to be released in January!

Armed With Truth Temporary Tattoos

cad6f3c0f685f05296f85ee62ba0c001fcd0bf45

Armed With Truth Temporary Tattoos are not only a great idea, but a great product. They go on easy and last almost a week.  (or a week if you are super careful)  I absolutely love these tattoos for a few different reasons. The first is how easy they are to apply. They go on just like any other temporary tattoo-but it looks more real and well done than any other temporary tattoo. (it isn’t “cartoon” like)

The next reason I absolutely love these tattoos is they open a door to witness. I can’t count the amount of conversations it started when I was wearing one of these tattoos. I got questions ranging from “what is that?” to “what does it mean?” and was able to tell others what the verses meant to me and why I was wearing it. It also was a great way for me to learn verses or review verses I hadn’t practiced in a while. Because they last about five days I am able to look at my wrist and read the verse through many times throughout the day.

These tattoos would be great for a youth group as a prize for memorizing a verse or answering a question right, or as a hand out to each teen to work on learning a verse. They would also be great for the homeschooling children who are working to learn a verse. Armed with Truth actually has a Custom Tattoo option so you can use any verse you would like in the style you want making it easy to make tattoos catered to what the teens or students are learning. After wearing a couple of these tattoos-I can honestly attest to their ability to open doors to witnessing to people-both known and unknown- and how easy they make learning verses for memory. They are great tattoos, and I recommend them to any Christian looking for a way to open more doors to witness or learn important verses to lead others to Christ.

Product Description:

Armed With Truth creates temporary designer tattoos of Scriptures to help remind people of truth found in the Bible throughout their day. Too often our days are full of fear, anxiety, or doubt, but now you can remind yourself of a higher truth about your identity or circumstances. They are also great tools for memorizing Scripture since they last 3-5 days. They look surprisingly real and attract a lot of compliments and questions.

What Is Armed With Truth?

We believe one of the most powerful ways to survive this crazy world is to have the Word of God written on your heart. When Jesus faced opposition, he answered the problem and lies with scripture. We ought to do the same. Yet, the process and practices of memorization are tough. We have tried it all: flash cards, sticky notes, covering one eye, you name it. The snazzy smartphone app was least effective because of the endless distractions that come with smartphones! Ugh!

We knew there had to be a better way….

We set out to make a way to get scripture into your memory bank by allowing you to take advantage of all the micro moments in life. If you don’t have a lot of time (like us), spending 25-30 minutes to memorize scripture isn’t something most people can maintain. We wanted to create a way people to take all their wasted micro moments in life (standing in line, at a stop light, in a drive through, in an elevator, riding a bike and even taking a shower) and make them opportunities to memorize scripture.

Armed With Truth was born to give you a ultra convenient (yet dashingly fashionable) way memorize scripture for a few seconds a day –everyday. The temporary tattoos are made for your inner wrists and will last for up to 7 days and are ready at all times for you to be encouraged and empowered. Each pack contains 10 verses centered around a transformational theme — from knowing your Identity in Christ to becoming a Change Maker. Over 100 of the best verses to memorize to transform your mind and equip you with the Word of God.

We hope that you love these as much as we do!

Eric and Mike

Pixie Candy’s Neck Roll Online Class for Kids

6e72c08aaab9cc6f424144a164a00e5f3e50629d

If you have been looking to teach your daughter (or son!) to sew, and just don’t know if they’ll be able to do it or if you’ll be able to teach them well, worry no longer.  Katrina Marie has put together a TON of craft ideas and easy sew projects just for kids. She gives the pattern directions first, then goes on to teach them how to iron and sew the rest.

I have been teaching my daughter how to sew for a little while now-due to space, we don’t have a sewing machine, but the project we did  is simple enough we were able to follow all of the directions as they were given, we just sewed by hand opposed to using the sewing machine.  We made the Pixie Candy Neck Roll-it is a super adorable, easy sew project that looks like a piece of rolled candy (like a tootsie roll) when it is finished.  It only takes three things to make it making it an easy project to do and it really is a great way to spend a little time with my daughter.

58bf0cf7e9ff370369432be8d2d956610871b487_1

The neck roll project is a great one for new sewers-whether they are using a machine or are hand sewing because it has an easy to follow pattern (it is basically a rectangle) and each detail is explained and shown clearly throughout the entire tutorial. Even though Bean could have cut out the pattern herself, I decided to help her, but in hind sight she could have done it without much help from me because it is super easy to do. (a 14 x 21 in rectangle)

The tutorial/class  is done in real time and takes about 15 minutes and in “real” life it takes close to the same time to hand sew it as well once a rhythm is found. Bean was able to follow the directions easily and because it only takes three “ingredients” (get it? it’s a candy neck roll?? ) it is simple to do and is also a very affordable craft. We are even thinking of making these for grandparents and other friends/family members for Christmas next year!  It is a great gift for any little girl-she will love following along with this class and finishing with an adorable candy shaped neck roll. My daughter uses hers all the time! (hence no pictures of it-I can’t get near it haha) It was a great way to spend the afternoon with Bean.

Terry Treetop and the Lost Egg

Terry Treetop and the Lost Egg by Tali Carmi is a super sweet, easy to read book for kids that teaches habitats and environments for animals in a way that kids understand. It starts with Terry Treetop observing nature through his binoculars and him finding a fallen egg. He goes from mommy animal to mommy animal to their different environments and asks them if the baby egg is theirs. He meets alligators, turtles, frogs, and a hen who all tell them they are not the eggs mother. He finally spots a nest high in a tree and climbs up to carefully place the egg in it’s place. He waits  and waits until the eggs mother returns. Before she makes it, though, the egg hatches and Terry Treetop has to quickly let the baby bird know he is NOT it’s mother. Soon his mother returns and finds her baby alive and well and they live happily ever after!

From the very start this book has an “Are You My Mother? ” feel to it. It is a great book for toddlers and younger children just learning to read. I can read it to my three year old who loves it or let my five year old who is just learning to read sit down and sound out words and read this book “by herself”.  We have read it a few times, and it is a wonderful book to discuss different animal homes and why they are different. (animal needs etc) My kids love reading this book and the pictures in it are beautifully drawn and very colorful making it even easier for the kids to read this great little e-book.

Right now you can find this book for free, but it may not last long, so be sure to check it out and purchase it now before the price goes up! You can read a quick description of the book and find where to purchase below!

K5 Learning Online

resize_6f534b917e6dca8f7522d20d7c257628ec1f3efcb5050d9392047b304948baf612284bfd250250

A few weeks ago I was given the opportunity to try K5 Learning with my daughter (5) and I can not say enough about it. It is a great program for homeschooling families with any children in the Kindergarten to Fifth grade levels to use in conjunction with their curriculum, or even for families with children who are “bored” or are under-stimulated,  or are struggling in math or English in school.

I have been using this for about four weeks with Bean and it has really been a huge help. You see, Bean LOVES math-she is incredibly great at it, but when it came to reading and spelling-things were lacking a little. Part of it was she has a minor dyslexia problem (common at her age and she is growing out of it) and partly because she just wasn’t getting it when I explained it. We needed a new approach.

K5 specifically focuses on Reading and Math while also working on basic math facts and spelling. By using information provided by the parent (or me in this case) it personalizes lessons based on grade and on their assessment.  It is fun and easy.  She really enjoyed the math-but it was the Reading she truly needed. The Math starts each section with a pre-test, then it does drills and works on math skills, and it finishes with a final test.

The Reading starts with working on letters then moved on to simple sight words. Bean absolutely enjoyed working with this program. (Just a note-she was in the K level of the program. Other grades may be different)  Each activity they did with her looked and felt more like a game than actual learning and she was really figuring out how to read and spell.  She is finally starting to read simple sight words on her own with out any assistance from me, and towards the end of her school year she was finally understanding how to remember words she had already seen and recognize letter sounds put together as words.

We plan to continue using this program alongside her home school curriculum and during breaks/summer when we won’t be sitting down and devoting so much time to working on these skills the way we have during the school year. Another thing I love is if we decide to use this program for E-man it will be discounted because he is a second child and it can be “programmed” to work with his delays and in the long wrong help him learn skills that he may otherwise struggle with in a way that is fun for him. (and yes, he LOVES playing with the computer.

For anyone looking for something to keep their kids sharp over the summer or winter breaks, home schooling, wanting to supplement with existing curriculum, or wanting an after school program for their children to work on Math and English-K5 Learning is the perfect program. Designed to help children in Kindergarten to Fifth grade develop the skills used as building blocks for later grades, K5 is bound to help your child succeed not only in K-5, but in the years to come.

StartWrite 6.0 Handwriting Worksheet Software (Windows)

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Handwriting isn’t always easy. It’s a learned skill-and not one so easily achieved. It takes years to fully master each pen stroke and word.  Writing is such an important skill in our day in age-from writing essays to signing our name on an important document.

You know how it goes-it starts with letters and numbers, then two letter words, the child moves on to three or four letter words and works towards short sentences and phrases, and so on.  Many of us, myself included, spend a lot of time and money on this prospect.  When my daughter started to write, I found myself spending money on things such as workbooks, white boards, tactile letters, more workbooks-because finding the perfect one is not as easy as you’d think, computer programs, and more.

It isn’t easy to find a good system, workbook, or program sometimes. But it is ever important to teach our kids to write. So what do we do?  I found myself so sick of the workbooks, computer programs, and endless advice from well intentioned people. I wanted nothing more than what was best for my daughter and what worked for us. So-I started making my own sheets. We would sound out short words and she would trace my own writing on notebook paper and practice to her little hearts content-or so I thought that’s what would happen anyways. Even that was too much-we spent so much on notebooks and there were days she just wanted the old worksheets that she had once said were too hard.

Then I found a new system-simple, inexpensive, and customized by me so it fits her needs and desires, yet still offers the handwriting education she so much needs. StartWrite 6.0 makes helping my daughter learn to write so easy. She can do both print and cursive, English and Spanish, and I can do just letters or I can add short words and sentences for her. It is all saveable, easy, and they even have addable graphics so it can be fun looking and catch my daughters attention.

Startwrite6.0  startwrite6.0-1startwrite6.0-2

I also love that if I am not sure what to do-I can watch Video tutorials on the StartWrite site and Youtube making it easy to figure out what I need to do or get good ideas for the next worksheet. StartWrite 6.0 gives the option to save to my computer so I can also save the worksheets and reuse them when my sons are old enough to get started.  I love that I can make handwriting sheets that coincide with my daughters curriculum as well. StartWrite 6.0 offers lots of graphic options so it is easy to coincide with the unit we are working on during that given week. I can even use my own clip art or pictures from my computer.

This is a worksheet made used to use during our Insect Unit. It only took about five minutes to make and print and the worksheet went right along with what we were learning about. (the last line is cut off because we are working on my daughters full name as well)

I highly recommend this program-especially to anyone who is home schooling or working on writing/spelling at home during the summer or even throughout the year. It is only $39.95 for the full version and if you aren’t sure how you’ll like it-they offer a trial period so you can try before you buy.

The Three

In my first post, I mentioned my three children in passing. For privacy reasons, I won’t be using their real or full names on here-but nicknames just for them.

My daughter, Els, who is almost five is the oldest. She’s the light in our day and is such a wise soul.

E.W. is our middle child. At three, he is so empathetic and thoughtful of others.

I-man is our youngest. Only one, his smile will brighten anyone’s day.

As a SAHM I get to spend a lot of time with the children. Some days we have a blast, others I wonder how I made it through the day without myself pounding my head off the wall in exasperation. It’s funny how people like to paint the picture of perfection, and expect others to do so also. I’ve never been so good at that…It’s like keeping my mouth shut when something bothers me. Although I’m learning that skill-it’s not one so easily done.

Today for instance…E.W. had a HORRIBLE day. If you have read my original post-you’ll see that we have our obstacles there. but it can be hard to handle the screaming in anger and lashing out that happens sometimes. If I were to say it was all roses-I’d be lying. I actually sent him to bed for a nap and hid in my room until he calmed down. It’s not my finest moment by far. As he came down the hall and snuggled me in my bed, I couldn’t help but feel that twinge of guilt as I stared into his piercing blue eyes as they stared back in mine.

Els’ day was okay. Peanut was sick today. Her poor tummy was off. I tend to be harder on her. I try not to be, but as her brothers copy her, I have such a hard time not holding her to a higher standard. But she’s just a little girl, just like they’re little boys. I understand I’m to raise her in the way she should go and “spare not the rod” so to speak-but she is still a child and it is healthy for her to be a child. I’m working hard to remember that the things she’s doing are normal-and yelling isn’t necessary. She understands when I speak the truth in love.

I-man was a sleepy bear today. He was a snuggly, sweet sleepy bear. With all the eating he’s done lately, I’m not surprised. Baby boy is bound to grow soon. And with six more teeth coming in all at once-I know I’d rather sleep too! He keeps me smiling-even on the longest, hardest days. One look at his sweet, always smiling (almost) face just brightens my day.

Tomorrow, I hope it will go much smoother. We have school to do and a tire to get. Books to read, and snowmen to make. (Maybe I’ll even show you!) We make our Christmas surprise tomorrow too-and paint it next week (just in time for Christmas!). We are close to a new year and many new changes. Soon I’ll share my resolutions, and maybe you’ll share yours with me too. Who knows, maybe we’ll even inspire each other to keep going-to reach our goals. Until then, I’m off to bed. Good night and God bless!
